Why You Should Make Some Flax Crackers Today

Flax crackers are an amazing thing to have in your kitchen. They are incredible versatile, easy to make, vegan, sugar free and gluten free. The base of the crackers is made from ground flax seeds and water.

Flax is quite a healthy little seed, filled with fiber and hard-to-find Omega3 fatty acids. They are incredibly affordable and make a delicious, crunchy, high fiber snack.

One of the best things about flax crackers is that the base recipe can be seasoned hundreds of different ways. You’re limited only by your imagination. For example, you can add garlic and onion bits, or add some nutritional yeast for a “cheesy” flavor. If you like Italian spices, you can add some oregano, basil and thyme. Or if you want to really take it up a notch, add Mexican spices like cumin, chili powder and red pepper flakes. I’ve even made them with diced veggies like carrots and peppers, which add color and nutrition.

Start with 2 cups of ground flaxseed. It’s best to buy whole flax seeds and grind them in a coffee or spice grinder. Add a cup of water, ½ tsp of salt and ½ tsp of whatever spices you choose to the dough.

As an aside, your body can’t process whole flax seeds. If you eat them, they pretty much go through your digestive system and come out in the same form. Grinding them is essential to absorb the nutritional value of them.

Combine all the ingredients in a big bowl until a dough forms. Spread as thin as you can on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or a non-stick silicone mat. The thinner you can get them, the crunchier your crackers will be.

Score the dough before baking and the crackers will snap into shape. That’s a good approach if you want your crackers to be uniform in shape. Otherwise, you can crack it into irregular shapes after it has baked.

Bake at 200C (400F) for 20 to 30 minutes. You want the crackers to be crisp with browned edges.  Best to check after 20 minutes. See if they will snap along one of the edges. Bake an extra 10 minutes if necessary.
