Timing Your Meals for Weight Loss

When you’re trying to lose weight, does it matter what time of day you eat? You might be surprised to learn that timing your meals for when your body is best able to metabolize them can be a very smart eating strategy.

Like the sun, the tides, flowering plants and many other natural beings, our bodies have a natural rhythm. We can manipulate and override them. The best time to eat your biggest meal of the day is when the sun is highest in the sky. So a full lunch eaten between 12 noon and 1:30 PM or so is ideal for giving your body fuel at a time it is most able to burn it.

Many people feel sluggish between 2:00 and 5:00 in the afternoon. This is perfectly normal and related to the body’s natural rhythm. It’s why some countries have a “siesta” – break time in the middle of the day. It gives people a chance to rest just when their bodies, and their metabolism, are the most lethargic.

Finally, contrary to the way many people in Western countries eat, nighttime is the worst time for a big meal. It’s best to try to eat your last meal four hours before going to bed. That gives your body time to digest and ensures that you’ll be hungry for a solid, healthful breakfast when you wake up in the morning.

Timing your meals to coincide with your body’s ability to burn calories is a great companion behavior both when you have your gastric balloon inserted and after the gastric balloon has been removed. Work with your body’s natural rhythm and you’ll be rewarded with more efficient calorie burning all day, every day.
