The Most Surprising Ways Getting Off Sugar Can Benefit You

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The number one reason people try cutting out sugar is to lose weight. Since sugar is an addictive food substance, it’s hard to regulate the amount of sugar you eat. Many people find that sugar in their diets is a challenge that can’t be tamed. The only relief comes from cutting it out as completely as possible.

There are plenty of diseases that getting off sugar can help you avoid or decrease your risk of getting in the first place. The most common is Type 2 diabetes, but dropping sugar can improve your blood pressure, help reduce triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels and keep you away from fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease.

Everyone knows that too much sugar erodes tooth enamel, but you may not realize that it also has an impact on your brain. Sugar can impair cognitive functions such as memory and responsiveness. Getting off of sugar can even out your energy and help you avoid the late afternoon slump, which may people treat, ironically, with a sugar fix.

But the truly surprising result of breaking up with sugar is the impact it will have on your skin. An excessive amount of sugar can make skill dull and wrinkled because the collagen and elastin (protein fibers) in skin are weakened by excess sugar. And that causes wrinkles and sagging. Increased sensitivity to sun damage can be caused by sugar’s negative impact on naturally produced antioxidant enzymes.

Excess sugar causes inflammation that can show on your skin in other ways as well. If you have psoriasis, for example, there’s a good chance that your symptoms will be significantly reduced once you break your attachment to sugar. It’s also true that too many sugary foods can trigger hormonal fluctuations, which are associated with acne. It seems that too much cake really can make you break out.

And one final thing to consider. Every time you make a choice to bypass processed and packaged sweets or bakery goods, not only are you saving money on impulse purchases of junk food to feed a sugar craving, you’ll also likely be more motivated to seek out new, healthier food choices. You may find yourself experimenting with new ingredients and new recipes to replace the sugary foods you used to snack on.
