The Importance of Breakfast – Myth or Fact?

People who are striving for health are often told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But is it true?

If you’re trying to lose weight, you’ve certainly heard the idea that skipping breakfast is a counterproductive way to save calories because you’ll only end up eating more later in the day.

It’s common to hear that, after 8 or more hours of not eating during the night, a healthy breakfast provides the body (and the brain) with the fuel needed to get going, especially protein, calcium, iron, B vitamins and fiber that are commonly found in typical breakfast foods such as yogurt, eggs and cereal and milk.

Another reason given for eating breakfast is that it increases your overall metabolism, by feeding the metabolic fire in your belly, setting you up for more efficient calorie burning throughout the day.

But this advice doesn’t work for everyone. Non-breakfast eaters often claim that they just don’t feel hungry in the morning. Sometimes, that’s due to excessive late-night eating. But some people have appetites that just don’t wake up until they have been awake for 4-5 hours. For others, forcing themselves to eat breakfast results in a sluggish feeling in the morning, especially if they eat a sugary or carbohydrate heavy breakfast.

So what’s the best approach? If you’re used to dietary certainties (that often prove to be false with the passage of time), this may shock you, but the answer is, “It depends.” Different people, different bodies, have different needs and respond differently. The trick is to experiment.

If eating breakfast feels like a chore, skip it for a week and see if that makes any difference in your energy level and in your desire to eat later in the day. If you’re not hungry in the morning because you tend to eat late at night, try ending your food intake 4-5 hours before bedtime and see if that doesn’t increase your desire for (nutritious, healthful) food in the morning.
