Do You Eat Late at Night?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

If you compare the day time eating patterns of many people to their night time eating patterns, it can be hard to imagine you’re talking about the same person. Late night eating (and night time binge eating) is commonly found among people trying to lose weight.

When you eat late at night, you’re forcing your body to digest your late meal while you sleep. Because it’s busy breaking down the pizza and ice cream you ate at midnight, your body can’t concentrate on what it’s meant to do at night, which is to detoxify, repair itself and strengthen tissues and organs. That means you can wake up feeling heavy, tired and congested. Your body, and especially your liver, simply didn’t have the time it needed to detoxify while you were sleeping.

And because you ate late at night, you won’t be that hungry in the morning, so you’ll postpone eating the bulk of your food until later in the day. And the cycle repeats itself endlessly. If you can’t stop yourself from eating late at night, you might think you have a willpower problem, but you may simply have a problem with your eating rhythm.

The two most important adjustments you can make are to stop eating approximately four hours before bedtime and to eat a substantial breakfast that includes some high quality protein. If you’re not usually hungry in the morning, late night eating is likely the reason why. When you stop eating by 7 or 8 PM, you’ll have a better chance of recognizing your body’s need for food in the morning. You will also have an excellent chance of increasing the quality of your sleep when your body is detoxifying at night instead of digesting your late night meal.

It can be hard to break the pattern, but if you can concentrate on eating more of your food during the day and stop eating after dinner just three or four nights in a row, your natural morning appetite will resurface and it will be easier for you to break the pattern. This timing change will also shift your metabolism into higher gear, making it easier for you to lose weight.
