Even You Can Do Chair Yoga

There are lots of great reasons to do yoga. But did you know you can do yoga without ever leaving your chair? Chair yoga is equally good for people who work at a desk all day and for people, such as seniors, those with special needs or those with larger bodies, who need accommodations to do yoga at all. Even people in wheelchairs can do some chair yoga poses.

Yoga teacher Ann Swanson offers a number of chair yoga videos on her website and on YouTube, like this 4-minute video that takes you through a yoga sequence you can do when you need a break from desk work. Swanson says that, after doing this brief sequence of chair yoga, you’ll feel renewed and invigorated, in just 4 minutes.

In a recent video interview with Dr. Susan Albers, Swanson gives tips on working the largest muscle groups in the body, including thighs, glutes, hips and core while sitting. She also gives tips for relaxing tension in the shoulders which is often caused by sitting for long periods.

A more advanced chair yoga sequence is available in this 20-minute video.

For some, chair yoga is a great way to begin the practice of yoga, without the stress of having to stand for long periods or assume complicated poses that are out of reach for their bodies.

Practiced regularly, chair yoga can help you build strength, flexibility, reduce stress and, in some cases, help manage chronic pain through measured breathing techniques.

One of yoga’s many gifts is to improve your sense of awareness of your body. It’s very important to work with your body wherever you are, and not to push yourself to do what you see others doing out of a sense of competition with others.
