You can start improving your relationship with food in the aisles of your local grocery store. Here are some tips for how to shop with your improved health in mind.
Stick with real, whole foods. Think carrots, avocados and chicken breasts. The healthiest foods have no ingredient labels. The less processed a food is, meaning the closest it appears to its natural state, the more nutrients it offers. So fresh peas in the pod are great. Frozen peas are also good. But canned or boxed split pea soup is likely to be loaded with salt and a bunch of other ingredients that aren’t going to offer you the nutrition your body craves.
Don’t kid yourself or sabotage your own success. If it’s in your cart and you know you shouldn’t be eating it, put it back on the shelf. Don’t rely on your willpower to avoid eating something once it’s already in your kitchen.
Avoid buying highly-processed, fake foods such as frozen diet meals, canned soups, diet or low fat versions of real foods, shakes that are intended to replace a meal, protein bars and the like. Food manufacturers work hard to market their highly processed foods to weight-conscious consumers. These foods are often full of salt, sugar and other chemicals. Labels that say “no added sugar” or “fat-free” does not mean a food item is healthy. It could still be full of sugar and empty calories.
Limit your time in the center aisles. The healthiest foods, fruits, vegetables, lean protein and dairy products are generally located along the grocery store’s walls. The processed foods like crackers, snacks and canned foods are generally sold from the inner aisles.
If you have to buy dessert for guests or family members, try to buy something such as an alternate brand or a flavor you don’t find as tempting.
Frozen fruits and vegetables are good choices. Since they are frozen almost as soon as they are harvested, frozen fruits and vegetables can be as nutritious as the same food that you’d buy fresh. In addition, some companies sell combinations of frozen vegetables that are cut, cleaned and ready for cooking.
