The new year is a perfect time for a fresh start; a time to turn a new page and establish new and improved routines in our daily lives. One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight, which often ends up being an incredibly difficult challenge for most people. In fact, studies have shown that only 12% of people will feel accomplished with their New Year’s resolution… Those aren’t great numbers. So, are there specific things I can do to help me accomplish my New Year’s resolution? Yes, and here are a few!
Choose something realistic
Each and every year, people will set non-specific resolutions… i like to lose weight! The more specific we are when setting our goal, the higher chances we have to actually accomplish it. So, this new year try a resolution like, “I want to lose 15 pounds”, or “I want to develop better eating habits”. While giving you something concrete to work towards, this will also give you a chance to start planning ahead!
Start planning ahead
When setting your New Year’s resolutions, it’s never a good idea to wait until the last minute to think about how exactly you’re going to accomplish them. Start by thinking about exactly how you want to set out to reach your goal, and maybe even set yourself some additional smaller goals on the way! By starting to plan ahead, you will be in a better position to start taking the small steps towards accomplishing your goal.
Baby steps first
One of the main reasons people fall behind on their New Year’s resolutions is because they instantly start to reach for the end result. Start with small steps forward; they’ll end up with you accomplishing your goal! Maybe start by trying to cut out a specific type of food or drink, or start by trying a new workout routine. Either way, by starting with baby steps you’ll build up the confidence to start taking larger leaps towards accomplishing your goal.
Support is key
Having a strong support system built up of family and friends can truly help you accomplish your goal. By speaking to those close to you about the objectives you’re setting out to accomplish, you can receive the help you need while staying motivated by those who love you most. Try asking those in your support system to each pick a certain way they can help you reach your goal, or even invite them along for the journey!

Find motivation in the mundane
During the first week of January, you’re probably going to feel highly motivated about what you’re setting out to accomplish. But, by the second week of February when you’re waking up at 6am to go to the gym, you might not feel too motivated. For this reason, it’s important to find motivation in the mundane, to be able to see the big picture and remember why you’re on this journey. The going may get tough, but if you always keep your eyes on the prize you’ll have no trouble accomplishing your goal.
If you start to fall, get back up
Oftentimes, when people encounter a setback they decide to give up on their New Year’s resolution. What people often don’t realize is that the path to your goal is not always straight; you may find some struggles along the way, but don’t lose the faith and the motivation required to accomplish your goals. When faced with a relapse or a small failure, try and understand what happened and why you failed. By learning from our mistakes we can ensure they won’t happen again.
